I'm going to risk making one of those predictions of the sort that can look

preposterous in a few weeks time and maybe even be disproved, but here goes one of the most

significant political events of this year so far at least has been the decision of Harry and

Meghan, the happy couple to invite Bishop Michael Curry to give the sermon at their wedding.

Love is not selfish and so saddened. Love can be sacrificial.

And in so doing, becomes redemptive.

And that way of one selfish, sacrificial,

redemptive love changes lives and it can change this world.

What you may wonder has the power of love, the message that love is the only way

got to do with politics. Well, in part it was delivered by a black man,

at a service that was dominated by the fusion of black popular culture with the white,

privileged royal family, but also because the message about the importance of positivity,

of support for one another looks to be more and more powerful in an era which has been so

dominated by anger and fear.

You might think that that singing, the mass applause, was all part of some celebration.

It was in fact on the anniversary of that terrible terrorist attack in my home city of Manchester,

a year ago, and yet the response of the people of that city, the spirit of Manchester,

as it's been called, and believe me, having talked to people there in recent days,

it is very far from PR, spin and guff. That spirit has somehow been unleashed and it's a very powerful

thing indeed.
