A victim's lifestyle can unfortunately shape the investigation into their death.

On August 13, 1999, the body of what would be the first of many victims of an unknown serial

killer was found in a case that saw an investigation hindered greatly by bias towards a victim's

lifestyle.

So if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled, sit back and

start your day with a morning cup of murder. Jane Marie Chafton was last seen in Lawton,

Oklahoma on August 9, 1999. Just 27 years old, Jane was a sex worker who was known to work along

the cash road area. But after days of being absent, her nude body was found in Sandy Bear Creek in rural Stevens County, about six miles northeast of the town of Velma.

By the time Jane's body was found, decomposition and the water ruined any real chance of finding out the cause of death, as well as washed away any real evidence if there was any.

But it was clear even then that she was the victim of foul play.

Given her profession, though, the suspect pool was vast enough that police didn't really

know where to begin. Or, in the opinion of many, they didn't really feel a pressing need to

solve her case with any sense of urgency, especially after they found traces of cocaine in Jane's

system.

Then she just became yet another sex worker with a drug habit,

who lived a quote, high-risk lifestyle.

Her death not necessarily taken seriously.
