Today we're going to go ahead and get started for today's lecture on crime. And in a departure

from talking about Jack the Ripper, we're going to talk about a crime that took place at the same time, more or less at the same time.

And we're going to talk about, as promised, H.H. Holmes and Gilded Age America.

So the quote there is from a contemporary newspaper of the era,

the most detestable criminal of modern times.

And the newspapers of the era, this was the era of yellow journalism.

A lot of newspapers, even smaller towns in the United States picked up on the crimes of H.H. Holmes.

And that was not even his real name. Herman Mudgeett was his real name,

Webster Mudgeett, Herman Webster Mudgeett, and his so-called murder castle.
