1:10.0	I was always the younger brother, the sort of yappier person, the person who was trying to get people to read the poems I wrote or whatever it was, whereas Tom was just quietly brilliant. This is Patrick Bringley.

1:15.6	He had this simplicity to him and frankness and a mildness and twinkly eyes,
1:22.6	and he was kind of soft-spoken and he would lean way back when you were talking to him. And he just had this,

1:33.5	In 2003, Patrick was living in New York when Tom moved to the city for graduate school.
1:39.9	He was brilliant. He was brilliant at math. He was getting his PhD in applied mathematics,
1:47.0	studying the way that cells operate, the way that fluids move within living cells.
1:53.0	Then, Patrick got a job at The New Yorker.
1:57.0	It wasn't a writing job. I was working in their events office, planning something they called the New Yorker Festival, and then other events like that, panels and things. And I thought that, well, maybe my career will be, you know, working up the ranks of the New Yorker here. And I'll write little, you know, unsigned book reviews and then work my way up to talk of the town pieces.
