Summary

#353: Daniel Pink joins us to discuss an unusual theory: (1) that our energy rises, falls, and then rises again; (2) that this pattern plays out across our days (morning energy, afternoon slump, nighttime second wind); (3) this also plays out across our lives, with serious implications for how we spend those “muddled middle” years of our 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Hey, so it's December as we take stock of the year that just passed and think about our

goals, our dreams, our hopes for the year that lays ahead. Wait, is it lays ahead or lies

0:10.3

ahead? You know, I always mix that up like, yeah, always my weak spot in English class.

Anyway, as we think about what we want for the year that exists in the future for 20,

0:23.2

otherwise known as 2022, it occurs to me that we often talk about what? This is the

0:29.9

is what I want to do. I want to build X net worth. I want a promotion at my job or I want

0:36.8

to leave my job and move to a different type of company. I want to buy a rental property.

0:41.1

I want to learn about crypto. Like, there are all of these what's, but we never think about

when. And it's a little ironic given that the impetus for thinking about what is the

when it is the symbolic closing of a calendar year and launch of a new year. There's nothing

innately magical that happens other than we all collectively participate in a social

1:06.7

construct that tells us that we're experiencing and ending and we're also experiencing a new

beginning. And that social construct is strong enough that it can motivate some incredible

1:19.0

change. And so this week, I want to air one more rewind episode. We'll be back next week

1:28.0

with a brand new fresh episode never heard before. But this week, I want to replay one of

1:34.6

my favorites. It's an interview with Daniel Pinky's The New York Times bestselling author

1:39.8

of multiple books. But specifically in this interview, he talks about the scientific secrets

1:46.0

behind perfect timing. And to give you a taste of what's coming up, let me tell you a little

1:50.9

story. In May, 1915, a renowned 58 year old C captain, Captain William Thomas Turner,

1:59.5

made a series of questionable decisions. You see, Captain Turner was the captain of the

Lucidania, a ship with 1,959 passengers, and it was sailing from Manhattan to London.

2:13.6

All around them, the first world war was taking place. And Captain Turner knew that he needed
