Seven-Year Itch had just been released to huge success, and Monroe had separated from and divorced Joe DiMaggio.

Rumors flew about her personal life, her next film, or her next publicity stunt, but nobody

exactly knew what was coming. Marilyn Monroe was sick of being pigeonholed by others and perhaps

herself as the happy go lucky sexy blonde

and of her contract at 20th century Fox. She was one of their biggest stars, but her contract had not

changed for five years, so she was paid far less than other actors of her same draw. And she

couldn't choose her own projects. She was sick of a lot of things.
