Summary
The Secret Life of Birds
Brian Cox and Robin Ince are joined by guests including Katy Brand, Steve Backshall and Professor Tim Birkhead to uncover the secret life of birds. They'll be looking at some of the extraordinary and cunning behaviour exhibited by many species of birds, both male and female, in an effort to attract a mate. They also get a special visit from Brann the Raven, who takes to the stage to demonstrate just how intelligent some species of birds can be. Producer: Alexandra Feachem.

| 0:02.0 | And I'm Brian Cox. |
| 0:03.0 | Today's show is biological. |
| 0:05.0 | So first we have to lure Brian in by making it appear to be about physics, |
| 0:10.0 | because he's not really keen on living things, or anything which have two complicated |
| 0:15.0 | structures, or indeed an inner world. |
| 0:18.0 | Even in a quantum universe, subatomic particles are more predictable than magpies and otters. |
| 0:23.0 | And he doesn't know anything that can't be explained in a one-line equation. |
| 0:27.0 | He's just going to get complaints now if he's going to be writing, and why do you hate magpies? |
| 0:31.0 | I don't even know what a magpioneurter is. |
| 0:33.0 | It's not ermn-no. |
| 0:35.0 | I know they're made of muons and glueons, but after that I lose all interest. |
| 0:41.0 | I have genuinely never met a human that smiles so much when he says the words, |
| 0:46.0 | and eventually the heat death of the universe. |
| 0:49.0 | Oh, won't that be neater? |
| 0:54.0 | Well, he won't actually will it, because the heat death of the universe is a state of maximum entropy. |
| 0:59.0 | So it'll be more disordered. |
| 1:01.0 | So it'll be very unneed. |
| 1:04.0 | It's a definition of the heat death, isn't it? |
| 1:07.0 | It's the most highly disordered state. |
| 1:10.0 | So anyway, today, |
| 1:12.0 | today where we talk about bird behaviour. |
