In 1849, a young British archaeologist named Austin Henry Laird crawled through the ruins of ancient

Nineveh in modern-day Iraq, beneath layers of sand and centuries of silence. He uncovered a library,

thousands of clay tablets covered in tiny wedge-shaped writing that nobody could read.
