Chapter One, The Ard-Knock Life

Liam's stared glumly out the window as his mom wound their car ever deeper into the Irish countryside.

They had left Dublin behind early that same morning, but already it felt a world away.

For the past hour or so, Liam had been counting sheep and houses. He was at 11 sheep and only two houses.

Not the best sign if you liked city living. Liam loved city living.

Why do I have to stay with Grum? He asked for the hundredth time.

Liam said his mother, her eyes impatient in the rearview mirror.

Your father and I have to go to America for business. You know this.

Yeah, but why can't I go with you? She twisted in the seat.
