Summary

In this episode, we explore Parkinson's disease (PD), which is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder of aging after Alzheimer's disease, and the most common movement disorder. It affects approximately 1 million people in the United States, and it is estimated that 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Worldwide more than 10 million people suffer from PD.

We described the disease in a patient story, discussed its epidemiology, causal pathways including genetics, signs and symptoms, medical and invasive treatments, prevention and future trends in research.

The topic of today's podcast is Parkinson's Disease.

0:15.4

And I'm going to start the topic by reading out a case presentation or a story. Janet is a 68-year-old woman. She's a

0:26.0

retired school teacher who lives at home alone with her dog. Janet's husband passed away five

0:32.3

years ago and she has been experiencing some depression and loneliness and has been withdrawn from her friends and

0:39.5

family over the past few years. She experienced a minor fall about three months ago after

0:45.0

tripping over her dog and landed on an outstretched right hand leading to wrist pain. So she saw

0:52.3

her family doctor regarding her wrist pain, but at the same time, she was

0:56.8

also complaining of some recent trouble with her balance, and she had noticed a small hand tremor.

1:04.2

She mentioned to the doctor that she had become quite wobbly, and she was having trouble with

1:09.4

her balance. Every time she'd be in her small

1:12.4

kitchen, she would bang her knees and elbows against the cabinets on the walls because she

1:16.9

couldn't stay still, or when she walked, she wasn't able to keep her balance. And so the doctor

1:22.9

saw some scratches and some bruises on her legs and arms because of that. She was also having some

1:29.4

trouble holding things steadily in her hand, and she said that she was becoming slower. She was

1:35.5

referred to a neurologist by her primary care physician, and the neurologist examined her and found

1:41.2

that she was having this particular kind of a tremble that we call pill rolling,

1:46.4

where, you know, the thumb and the index finger kind of roll over each other,

1:51.1

and it seems like as if, you know, somebody is actually rolling a pill with that particular hand,

1:56.6

and it seemed to be more prominent during rest.

2:00.1

She was also having some stooped posture.
