Summary

On Halloween weekend in 2015, a quiet community in Pendleton, South Carolina, was shattered by a brutal quadruple homicide. Four members of the Scott family were found dead in their home, the victims of a savage knife and gun attack. For years, the case remained cold, leaving a family and a town desperate for answers. The initial theory of a robbery gone wrong slowly gave way to a more disturbing possibility: that the killer was someone they knew. Eight years after the murders, investigators finally made an arrest that stunned everyone. The person charged with the killings was not a stranger, but the daughter and step-daughter of two of the victims, Amy Vilardi. This episode follows the long and twisted investigation, the shocking trial, and the dark family secrets that were revealed along the way. Thank you to this week's sponsors! On a quiet stretch of rural road in Pendleton, South Carolina, a woman walked into her mother's home and flipped on the light. I'm feeling lucky as episodes coming out on St. Patrick's Day. So I feel like lucky. I'm actually wearing a green shirt today. You are. I'm wearing a green hat. Does that count?

0:55.3

Yeah, it does. It does. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. So happy to be here. Happy to be in March and happy to be

1:02.3

kind of adjusted to the new time change that we're in. I feel like things are getting better.

1:09.5

Girl. Getting better all the time. I'm just curious, like, when I haven't changed, like, the microwave or the oven, and I'm just curious if anybody else will do it. So I just am waiting. So TBD, if it changes, I'll let you know. But I'm, that's actually going to be my mission. Let's see how long this takes. Yeah, we have a couple

clocks too that are not, haven't been set and no one in my house seems to have noticed that at all.

1:33.3

So I'm going to go with no one's ever going to figure it out. I know. I might be here until the next,

1:38.3

the next daylight savings time or whatever the opposite is. Daylight losing time. I don't know.

1:45.3

Yeah, basically.

Basically. That's winter. That's winter for you. Yeah. So we'll get into the story for this week.

So on November 2nd, 2015, deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office were sent to a home on refuge road near Pendleton, South Carolina, after what was initially reported as a burglary was called in.

2:02.6

But when they got there, this wasn't a break-in scene. It was a massacre. Inside the home,

2:08.2

deputies found four members of the same family dead. At first, authorities said all four had

2:13.6

been shot to death, but investigators would later learn the violence had been even more

2:17.7

brutal than that initial description had suggested. Investigators believe the murders happened

2:23.4

sometime between Halloween afternoon and the following afternoon when a family member stopped

by the house and got no answer. One small detail helped narrow the timeline a little bit,

2:33.7

and that was that a bowl of Halloween candy was sitting untouched by the front door, which led investigators to believe that the killings may have taken place on October 31st, which is really creepy and horrific if you think about people moving about the neighborhood, kids are out trick-or-treating, knocking on doors, and at that point

there could have been four people dead inside of this home already. And the crime scene itself was just
