Summary

In this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta sits down with board-certified dermatologist and Surface Deep founder, Dr. Alicia Zalka, to challenge everything you thought you knew about deodorant and body care. With over three decades in medical dermatology, Dr. Zalka shares why the underarm — and the rest of your body — deserves the same ingredient-conscious, science-backed attention we give our faces. Her journey from clinic to product creation started with an accidental discovery: a forgotten deodorant, a swipe of glycolic acid, and a surprising odor-free day.

Unlike conventional deodorants that mask odor or antiperspirants that block sweat, Surface Deep takes a different route — keeping skin’s pH balanced, supporting beneficial bacteria, and creating an environment where odor-causing microbes can’t thrive. Dr. Zalka explains the science behind sweat, the role of the skin microbiome, and why killing all bacteria is not the goal.

She also dives into the delicate nature of underarm skin, why common deodorant ingredients can cause irritation, and how glycolic acid — when formulated correctly — can be a game changer for smooth, odor-free skin. Beyond the underarms, Dr. Zalka introduces the “Stinky Seven” — seven surprising body zones prone to odor — and her take on the rise of whole-body deodorants.

This conversation is equal parts myth-busting and practical skin science. If you’ve ever wondered why your deodorant stops working, what’s really behind body odor, or how to care for your skin without disrupting its natural balance, this episode will change the way you think about body care forever.

And I feel like a lot of body care right now, and I think a lot of you might have seen this, it's focused on kind of the same route that facial skin care was taking for a long time.

So there's not really a lot

0:21.7

of education and like, you know, clinically based, efficacious products out there that we can rely on

0:27.9

for our body, just like we do for our face. So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys

0:32.5

to the founder and CEO of Surface Deep, Dr. Alicia Zalka, which is a brand that is focused on body care,

0:52.5

you know, what we should be kind of focusing on,

0:54.9

right, when it comes to, especially in the deodorant category and, you know, figuring out what actually works, what doesn't. So I want to kind of dive in, but first I'd love to talk about you and your background. You have over 30 years of experience in medical dermatology. I mean, that's amazing. So if you can walk us down

1:11.2

memory lane to tell us a little bit about your career and everything that led up to the creation

1:15.0

of your brand. Oh, yes. It's been quite the journey. Yes, I'm 30 years in clinical practice.

1:21.1

I was in a, I recently retired. So I'm actually not in my clinical practice right this moment, although I have my, I'm still working in dermatology. I do volunteer work through my affiliation with Yale. I volunteer and see patients at our local VA hospital, which brings me great joy. I teach residents. But for 30 years, I was in practice and I learned so much.

1:49.4

Medical school was training, but doing it face to face with patients was really the training.

1:54.8

And I had such a fantastic practice and I learned so much.

1:59.5

And one of the things that I learned is that, you know, people have questions. And one of the things I love so much about your

2:01.3

podcast is that you answer those questions in such a transparent, honest way. And it's about, you know,

2:06.6

science. It's about getting answers from people you trust. And this is what it's all about. So thank you for this platform.

2:14.8

But so what happened was I was in my practice for 30 years doing just

beautifully. I love, we had a great relationship with my patients. I did medical dermatology,

surgical dermatology, cosmetic. I did it all. And, um, and I'm both a dermatologist, but I'm also a
