Summary

As you get older, your eyes worsen and become susceptible to a disease called age-related macular degeneration -- the leading cause of blindness, with no cure in sight. Sharing the science of how your vision works, researcher Joshua Chu-Tan offers breakthrough insights on a lesser-known protein that could change the treatment for this disease, preserving the gift of sight for longer and improving the quality of life for millions of people.

I'm Elise Hugh. You're listening to TED Talks Daily. I had no idea about this incurable disease until hearing today's talk. It's from researcher Joshua Chutan. It's the leading cause of blindness in the developed world, which is a stunning stat. In his talk from Ted X Christchurch in 2019, Chutan takes us

0:23.3

through the rather beautiful process that allows us to see, to help explain the pioneering

0:28.6

science to keep us seeing clearly. Now, to start off today, I want everyone to close their eyes.

1:31.2

couldn't live without is, most will immediately say their sight. And you can understand why that is.

1:37.2

I mean, our vision and what we see play such an integral role in to how we perceive the world around

1:42.0

us. I mean, just look at how much we spend on buildings, on parks, on architecture,

1:47.0

on things just to please our visual sense.

1:50.8

But what if we can't see?

1:53.9

What if we lose this gift?

1:57.0

Well, this is exactly what happens in age-related macular degeneration, or AMD.

2:03.0

This disease is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.

2:07.4

This disease affects one in seven New Zealanders over the age of 50, and yet the most common form of this disease has no cure.
