In today's episode of The Root Cause Medicine Podcast, Dr. Kate Kresge sits down with Trevor Connor and Dr. Griffin McMath of The Paleo Diet to explore why the Paleo diet is more relevant than ever in today's world of extreme dieting. You'll hear them discuss: 1. How modern food processing has introduced foods our bodies aren't designed to digest 2. How grains, dairy, and ultra-processed foods may impact overall health and digestion 3. The health benefits of following a paleo lifestyle 4. How the paleo diet supports sustainability, budget-friendly eating, and even brain health 5. The practical aspect of adopting a paleo diet Trevor is the CEO of The Paleo Diet and Co-Founder of Fast Talk Laboratories. A former professional cyclist who competed until age 53, his journey with the paleo diet began when he was a student at CSU studying under Dr. Loren Cordain, the diet's originator. Initially skeptical, his attempts to disprove the diet's principles led him to become one of its strongest advocates after experiencing significant improvements in his own health and athletic performance. Dr. Griffin is a key figure at The Paleo Diet organization, bringing her background in anthropology and integrative healthcare to the team. She has worked in integrative oncology and various healthcare settings, focusing on making the paleo lifestyle accessible and practical for diverse populations. Today on the Root Cause Medicine Podcast. I was a professional cyclist for years, and I ate a traditional

0:07.4

sports nutrition, high sugar, high salt diet. And I retired when I was 38 because I was just getting

0:14.2

sick all the time and couldn't figure out why I was getting sick. The doctors couldn't figure out

0:18.8

why I was getting sick. And I just went, I'm just getting old. I can't handle this sort of level of training. So I went back to school, went to CSU,

0:25.4

and one of my first classes was with Dr. Cordane. And having learned traditional sports nutrition,

0:30.9

I sat there in the class and I was angry. I was like, this guy's full of it. Could not believe what he

0:35.8

was saying. It was so angry, I spent the

0:38.3

summer after that class trying to prove him wrong. And in the course of trying to prove him wrong,

0:44.2

I'd go through the science and go, well, that makes sense. But this can't be right. And then I'd go

0:48.2

through the science. I'd go, well, actually, that makes sense too. And slowly over time, I ended up

0:53.3

on the paleo diet without even knowing it. And that winter

0:57.6

was the winter I was 38 and all of a sudden I wasn't getting sick anymore. And even though I was a

1:02.8

full-time student, I was training better and harder than I had in years. I went to Canadian

1:08.6

Nationals on my 39th birthday and missed third place by a wheel length.

1:13.5

And actually, the next year, it went back to racing pro.

1:16.1

And briefly, that year, at age of 40, I was ranked top 10 in America.

1:20.5

I'm not as fast as I used to be, but I did a professional race down in the Caribbean two months ago at the age of 53.

1:31.3

So that, for me,'s an end of one, but that was the evidence of the diet for me,

1:33.3

and that was entirely the diet.

1:35.3

It gave me many more years to be able to race,

1:38.3

of being healthy, of just no longer having all these illness issues.

1:43.3

That turned me into the convert.
