because of racism, because of discrimination, because of all of these things.

In May 2020, U.S. Census Bureau data revealed that 34 out of every 100 American adults

experienced depression, anxiety, or both.

And while many rely on psychotherapy as an effective tool for managing their mental health,

for black Americans, that path to wellness was not necessarily paved with good intentions.

The system was not developed with us in mind, and it has been really harmful.

You know, there was a diagnosis at one point in the DSM, which is our, like,

big manual of, you know, mental health concerns for slaves who ran away from their plantation.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, black people are more often diagnosed with

schizophrenia and less often diagnosed with mood disorders compared to white people with the same symptoms.
