Hello and welcome to Political Thinking, the podcast in which I have a conversation with

those who shape our thinking about what has shaped theirs. The joy of doing this program

when there's a cabinet reshuffle is that I've already had conversations with many of those

who are given a leg up in the cabinet. They've already revealed what really makes them

tick the real pleasure, I'll be honest with you, is reading the stories revealed on this

podcast, retold in newspapers, magazines and websites. Take our new Foreign Secretary,

Liz Truss, I interviewed her when she was chief secretary to the Treasury. We spoke about

many things, her beliefs, her ideology, but in particular the fact that she was brought

up in a very left-wing household. Just listen to what shaped her political thinking. It

might just surprise you. My mum took me on CND marches in the 80s, we used to go to

local peace camp. I remember one occasion where we had a nuclear bomb that we made for some

old carpet rolls that we took along on a demonstration. Did you ever chant as a child,

Maggie out? Yes. Where were you? So we lived in Scotland in

Paisley near Glasgow. My dad was a lecturer at the local university. I remember standing

in the Paisley Piazza and we were chanting that slogan and other slogans. You could say

that. You could say the word Maggie out. Well, it was Scottish, it shows Maggie, Maggie,

Maggie, ut, ut, ut, ut. When the Foreign Secretary gets to give her big party conference

speech, I just wade your small bet. She won't start or end by saying Maggie, ut, ut,

ut. Someone else who the party conference will look forward to hearing from is the new
