In the fall of 2014, the Obama White House got a wake-up call.

The National Security Agency had detected an alarming computer breach.

We're seeing signs the Russians have gotten access to the White House, the NSA's Deputy

Director, told Obama's Chief of Computer Security.

This turned out to be no ordinary hack.

Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SBR, had penetrated not just the White House

computer system, but the State Department as well, and began exfiltrating data and emails

of US officials dealing with issues of interest to Moscow.

Even President Obama's private schedule was targeted.

Little was said at the time about the hack and who was responsible, but it led to a furious

cyber battle between NSA's cyber sluts and Russian hackers that one top official compared

to hand-to-hand combat.

But if this was a wake-up call, the American government didn't stay woke.

Less than two years later, the Russians struck again, hacking the Democratic National Committee

and the Hillary Clinton campaign.

And in recent days, US officials discovered that the Russians were once again at it.

This time, using highly sophisticated new techniques to penetrate computers at the departments

of Homeland Security, Treasury, Commerce, and State, as well as untold numbers of major

US corporations.

Why do these attacks keep happening and how come the billions we spend on cyber defenses

aren't able to thwart them?
