Hey and welcome back to the runcast on Kexp. I'm John Richards, your host. I have a lot to get to on the runcast today. I'm so excited for you to listen to this on your run. And it's got a couple of subjects in it, okay? The first one is we're going to do a live session runcast. So this entire runcast is live music captured by Kexp. So you are running

during a concert. That is my goal here. And the other thing that it made me think of is failure.

0:30.4

I've had a few in my training recently and I wanted to just really quickly talk about failure.

0:35.0

And I think it ties in because musicians, oh my God,

0:37.8

man, every last one of them, successful or not, have dealt with failure. And as a runner, you know what I'm talking about. I didn't hit the pace I wanted to hit. I didn't sign up for a run this year. I didn't get my PR. I didn't run enough this week. I took a day off. I've been running so much lately that the other day I took a day off and I just beat the hell out of

0:56.9

myself over it. How dare you take this day off? I take regular days off, but this was that extra one. I run five days a week. I only ran four, and I felt terrible about it. I know some of you know what I'm talking about. Listen, it's not a failure first off to do that. It's good to rest your body. But the next thing is, if you do fail, quote fingers, if you do build on it, learn from it, move on from it, it's the only way we advance in this life. And as a runner, I know you've run into these failures. So let's think about that run you didn't do or the race She didn't quite finish or just something that you can plug in your head while we do this run,

this quote that I found from Johnny Cash. It says, you build on failure. You use it as a stepping

stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have

freaking Cash right there. All right, let's get started with my friend Jose Gonzalez and heartbeats.
