Summary

0:10.0	This day, July 8, 1947 Actures July 8th, 1947, actually it's July 7th, 1947 is our date.
0:17.0	And I think that for a lot of listeners, that date may not mean much, but I suspect there
0:20.5	are some out there who know exactly what happened on July 7, 1947,
0:24.8	or maybe a little obsessed with what happened on July 7, 1947,
0:28.8	because that was the date that a rancher named W. W. Mack Brazel and his son Vernon, great names, great 1940
0:37.0	Mac and Vernon were driving across their ranch land some 80 miles north of Roswell, New Mexico when they encountered something they'd never seen before.
0:45.8	It was, in Max words, a large area of bright wreckage made up of rubber strips,
0:52.0	tin foil and rather tough paper and sticks.
0:55.5	He didn't really know what to do.
0:56.5	He didn't know what it was, so he basically took it up the chain of command.
0:59.7	He talked to the local mayor, who eventually ended up talking to the Air Force who then
1:03.4	took possession of the wreckage. In the next day's paper there was this headline
1:08.3	Roswell Army Airfield captures flying saucer on Ranch in Roswell. And from then, well, Roswell entered the public
1:16.8	imagination, flying saucer fever, rumors of captured aliens, ARA 51, black sights, on and on and on and on.
1:22.8	And here we are today doing this episode about the wreckage found in the New Mexico
1:28.6	Desert in 1947.
