Secretaries picked them up one by one. Every line is the same. Silence. It was the first sign that something inside this office was beginning to slip out of order. The

A modest building, two stories, whitewashed walls, a brass nameplate at the door. Inside the practice ran with routine precision. Secretaries at their

desks, letters stacked neatly in trays, typewriters clattering through contracts and correspondence.

Telephones sat ready at the corners, receivers heavy in their cradles.
