Summary

Today, Robert Jenrick used his first speech as Reform’s pick for chancellor to try to convince businesses and economists that he would be sensible with their money.

He said it would reintroduce the two-child benefit cap in full, in a shift away from scrapping the limit.

He also said the party plans to keep UK's budget watchdog The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

So we thought it would be a good time to explore exactly what Reform’s plan for the economy was, and ask is it really that radical?

Hello, we're recording this episode of newscast on Wednesday, the 18th of February mid-afternoon,

0:11.1

and it's a day where we got a serious look at the next phase of Reform UK.

0:17.0

So on Tuesday, they unveiled their shadow spokespeople, putting the big names and the big jobs.

0:23.3

And today, one of them, Robert Jenrick, who describes himself as the shadow chancellor for Reform

0:27.9

UK, was doing a speech in the city.

0:30.9

It was very serious, much less Rasmatazi than some other reform events, much less kind of punchy,

0:37.1

because it was designed to send a

0:38.6

message of reassurance to businesses and the banks and institutions that lend the British

0:45.0

government money, that they would be okay if reform were in government. And he also talked about

0:51.6

a whole load of policies reformer thinking of introducing when it comes to the economy and the public finances.

0:57.2

So we thought this would be a really good day to drill into what reform actually want to do when it comes to the economy and running the nation's balance sheet.

1:06.1

So that's what we're doing on this episode of Newscast, where we will be joined by Robert Jenrick.

Newscast from the BBC. Fat boy sliver me in the classroom doing our violin lessons. I was the tattletail in the class. Can I have an apology, please? I trust almost nobody. That daddy has to sometimes do strong language. Next time in Moscow. I feel delulu with no salulu. Take me down to Downey Street. Let's go have a tour. Blimey.

Hello, Robert Jenrick. Hello. So, first of all, just before we talk about economic policy,

1:37.0

we were all gripped that day you did your defection. And Nigel Farage says, Robert Jenrick

1:42.3

is coming to the stage. And then it took you a good couple of minutes to get there. What was actually happening? Clear it up for us. I'd love to be able to tell you that there's some kind of dramatic story. It's not like sort of like Superman changing outfits. It was like that. No, I was sort of holed up in an office on the floor below. And then the lifts in Millbank Tower took ages to come. Right. And so I was about two or three minutes slow and there, so that was it really. Although it's given Nigel something to dine out on now. Yeah, because he now mentions it every time you're introduced to something. Every time I'm introduced or he does one of these rallies around the country, which which we're doing virtually every day now. One of his stock jokes is, you know, I hope they're not going to be late like Robert Jenric. So I'm going to have to be very timely. Exactly. Yeah, please be on time all the time. Talking about the events, I was struck on Tuesday when the so-called shadow cabinet was unveiled. It was a lot of Rasmata... Reform likes

2:34.6

Rasmatazi events. They do. Why is that? Because they're fun. I mean, I think the thing

2:40.1

about reform, which is unique, is the sense of energy and momentum that there is. And I mean that,

2:46.1

you know, genuinely, we, a few days after I arrived, they organised a rally in my constituency

2:53.0

in Newark. And I thought, thank you very much. They put out an email to people who were

2:59.4

supporters of the party within 30 miles of Newark, which is a small town in a fairly rural area.
