Summary

Selina was 11 years old when she first started cutting. It was her way to cope with the immense trauma she’d already experienced in her young life. Now, as an adult, she wants to know how self harm fits into the world of addiction. Nzinga and Selina have an intimate, one-on-one conversation about trauma, recovery, and Selina’s own words of wisdom to others in her position. Please note, In Recovery contains mature themes and may not be appropriate for all listeners.

All righty, hello everybody. This is In Zenga, and you are listening to In Recovery.

0:45.7

This week we're going to be talking about self-harm. So let me start just up front with a trigger

0:51.1

warning. We have some pretty heavy, pretty painful content in this

0:56.3

week's episode. We'll be talking about sexual assault and self-harm. So I wanted to just drop some

1:02.2

resources up front and we'll put these in the show notes, of course. If you or anyone you know

1:08.9

is working through self-harm, you can call a crisis hotline.

1:13.6

The goal is that when you get that trigger to self-harm that you call the crisis hotline

1:18.5

before you self-harm so that we can hopefully prevent it.

1:22.4

So the first one is the crisis text line.

1:25.5

So you literally just text the word hello, H-E-L-O, to 741-7-4-1. And somebody will get on with you

1:34.6

immediately. The second one is the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. So that's 1-800-273-8255.

1:43.4

Like the crisis text line, that's 24-77 and somebody will hop on the phone with you.

1:48.8

And then the last one I'm going to give you is actually the Trevor Project.

1:53.4

So the Trevor Project is specifically for LGBTQIA plus kids and teens to be able to reach out during a crisis. And so the number is

2:03.3

678, 678, and you just text the word start. S-T-A-R-T.

2:14.5

So with that, let me give you my regular introduction.
