I live about a mile from a mighty river.

Well, the Hudson isn't actually a river, it's a tidal estuary, it's a fjord, it's filled

with brackish water half salt and half fresh.

Half of the day, twelve hours, the water flows in one direction from the ocean, and then

the other half it turns around and flows the other.

Centuries ago, there were so many oysters in the lower Hudson River that they were essentially

free.

Years ago, the Hudson River was plied by ferries back and forth up and down.

It was a waterway, it was a shared reserve, it was the lifeblood of this neighborhood.
