The rising star in chipmaking you may not have heard of.

Invidia and Intel, you've heard of.

Maybe AMD and Broadcom, too.

But there's a lesser-known chipmaker that's riding the AI wave all the way into the NASDAQ, where it is about

to start trading. That would be the Korean company S.K. Heenix. It makes specialized chips

that are in very short supply right now, and that has sent the company's stock soaring on

South Korea's exchange. Now traders in the U.S. will have easy access to the stock,

to Marketplace's Nova Saffo. Has more. Ski-Hinix makes memory chips and is the dominant source

of a particular kind of silicon called high bandwidth memory, HBM chips. They're in

everything AI-related. Invidia uses them in its chipsets. Other tech companies building

data centers need them as well. The demand for these chips has been so great that it's led to an

intensifying global shortage of memory chips, and chip makers are cashing in. S.K. Hynix's operating

profit was up five-fold over 12 months, according to its latest earnings report.

Its stock is up 250 percent so far this year. At one point last month, it even overtook Samsung as South Korea's most valuable listed company.

While some analysts worry about how long the chip boom can last, S.K. Heinex is hoping to raise

$28 billion from a U.S. stock sale to build more chipmaking capacity back in Korea.

It is scheduled to debut on the NASDAQ exchange on Friday.
