'Septimius Severus, also known as Severus, was Roman emperor from 193 to 211. He was born in Leptis Magna in the Roman province of Africa. As a young man he advanced through the customary succession of offices under the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Severus seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors.'

December 31st, 192 AD.

Commodus gets murdered in his bath.

He gets immediately seceded by Perchanx.

Perternax lasts three months, but after such a short period of trying to introduce some reforms and instill some new discipline.

The Praetorian Guard gets sick of him.

They kill him.

And then they decide it might be fun to see who offers the biggest donative to become emperor.

So in fact, they auction off the throne of Rome. And the winner with

25,000 sistercies offered is Didius I. Within two weeks of Didius Julianus coming to power,

Septimius Severeus, the governor of Pannonia Superior, is marching on Rome and a couple weeks later,

just because the delay in getting the news probably, the governor of Syria has also had himself proclaimed as emperor.

That's Piscania Sneger. About six weeks later, Septiminius Severeus is in Rome,

and now it really begins. Julius Julianus' support has fallen away. He gets murdered,

and the Senate decides that Septimius Se Severus should now become emperor.

Unlike, say, AD69, there haven't been very many real battles.

There have just been career politicians who got themselves murdered, but the party is about to start.

And one of the first things he does is to disband the Praetorian Guard.
