Summary

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an interconnected series of movies and TV shows that produced four of the top-grossing movies of all time and changed the way Hollywood works. It also may have a hard time sustaining the cultural and business dominance it has enjoyed for the last decade-plus. Here to discuss the superhero’s journey is writer and podcaster Joanna Robinson (@jowrotethis), co-author of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. She gives Vox’s Peter Kafka the 101 on the history of Marvel and how it spiraled into myriad streaming shows and films that are increasingly difficult to keep up with in “phase five,” or as Robinson calls it, “the wobble.” Host: Peter Kafka (@pkafka), Senior Editor at Recode More to explore: Subscribe for free to Recode Media, Peter Kafka, one of the media industry's most acclaimed reporters, talks to business titans, journalists, comedians, and more to get their take on today's media landscape. I love talking to you about dragons and superheroes and sort of drag you down into the genre dirt with me, Peter.

1:41.3

I don't like the implication that I'm above the genre dirt.

1:45.2

I love genre stuff,

1:49.7

but I am often confused by it, which is, which is, in particular, I wanted to talk to you about Marvel because we talk a lot about the business of Marvel and the business of Disney.

1:55.2

And occasionally, I think, I tend to sort of forget why people like the stuff. And I wanted to

2:00.2

talk to you about that. But tell me what the book is supposed to be. Is it for hardcore Marvel fans or people who don't spend a lot of time thinking about Marvel? Is it for businessy people? This is the question I was asking the entire time we were writing the book as I was having this sort of identity crisis. So who is this book for? I was constantly what I was asking my co-authors. And eventually what we decided maybe for our own piece of mind was that it's for everyone. I know that sounds like a really slick sales tactic. But I really do think, so there's definitely juicy tidbits in here for people who think they already know everything about Marvel. I've heard that from a number of people

2:34.6

who thought they knew everything about Marvel and their own. There was so much in here I didn't know.
