Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I'm your host, John DeLinn. It's July 30th, 2025. And today we have a very special rebroadcast of a Mormon stories classic. And let me just give you a little background. So when I was at Brigham Young University back from 1987 to 1993, there was a really important

0:24.8

magazine called Sunstone Magazine that covered Mormon history, Mormon news, Mormon current events,

0:33.1

Mormon culture, Mormon art, etc. And it was for sure one of the most influential things in my life

0:40.8

at the time. It's where I learned about the Polly Stun scandal. It's where I learned about

0:44.3

the baseball baptisms. It's where I learned about the George P. Lee scandal. It's where I learned

0:48.5

about the September 6th. And, yeah, Sunstone Magazine at its peak had over 10,000 subscribers. And before the internet,

0:57.2

it was for sure the way that people found friends and community and support for a Mormon faith

1:03.6

crisis. So this year, August of 2025, Sunstone is celebrating its 50th anniversary. And so I'll be speaking at the

1:15.0

Sunstone Symposium in a couple days on, you know, reflecting on the Mormon internet over the

1:20.2

past 25 years, but also just, you know, this is a time for us to celebrate Sunstone and its importance and its history.

1:30.2

So back in 2007, I interviewed Albert Peck.

1:35.0

And Albert Peck was the editor of Sunstone Magazine from from 1986 to 2001.

1:42.6

Probably the longest, one of the longest serving editors of Sunstone Magazine,

1:47.2

if not the longest serving editor of Sunstone.

1:51.5

Sunstone was started by a couple people whose names you've probably never heard of,

1:55.3

Scott Kinney and someone else.

1:56.8

Then Peggy Fletcher Stack took Sunstone over and for several years,

2:00.7

ran both the magazine and the symposium until she left to go work for the Salt Lake Tribune.

2:07.1

And then Albert took it over and sort of 1986 to 2001 was, I would say, the most influential, the most successful, the most powerful time of Sunstone.

2:19.6

Sunstone was so powerful that Dalton H. Oaks issued a statement condemning it, but obviously

2:24.9

1993 was the year I graduated for BYU. It was also the year of the September 6th. So, Sunstone's

2:31.7

super important. There wouldn't be a Mormon stories without Sunstone.
