Summary

In a special crossover episode, Bill and Brian welcome Randy and Dan from That Dandy Classic Music Hour (thatdandyclassicmusichour.com) to finally return to covering a Replacements album with their 1987 classic Pleased to Meet Me (Sire). Bill and Brian discuss the band's history and their newfound hi fi sound before cutting to our conversation with the Dandy Classic guys where we delve into Paul Westerberg showing off his lead guitar skills, Jim Dickinson's contributions, Chris Mars' art career, Tommy Stinson's post-'Mats bands Bash & Pop and Perfect, and of course everyone's favorite teen comedy Can't Hardly Wait (the film) as we make our way through the album track by track! For more of our conversation with Dan and Randy, including how we discovered the band and our top 5 songs from the album, make sure to take a listen to the Dandy Classic episodes for the next two weeks!

Welcome to the Great Albums podcast. I'm Bill. And I'm Brian. And what are we talking about today, Brian?

0:05.4

1987's Pleased to Meet Me by the Replacements. What we do here every week on the podcast is take an album of music and talk about what makes it great.

0:30.0

We try to have the conversation around the music that fans do, and then we end it all by doing a track-by-track analysis in which we talk about what we like about the songs and the things we think about while listening to them.

0:42.3

Oh, sounds good. And we're not going to do it alone this week.

0:44.7

No, we're not. And actually, this is an interesting first time for the podcast that we are doing a crossover episode.

0:53.5

Yeah, yeah, really neat.

0:55.1

We, uh, we joined forces, uh, with our friends Dan and Randy at that dandy classic music hour.

1:02.5

Yeah, we actually were down in Nashville a couple weeks ago.

1:05.9

Uh, for those that remember, we had gone down there for the Nashville Rock and Pod Expo.

1:10.3

Uh, we did a live show from the stage, and Pod Expo. We did a live show from

1:11.6

the stage, released that last week, and then this week, we had gone over to Dan's house.

1:17.8

He had us over, welcomed us into his home. We got to meet his family, got to have some food

1:24.2

with them. It was really cool. But while we were there, we decided to take some

1:27.8

time and talk about one of our favorite bands, The Replacements. Yes, indeed. And we decided

1:35.3

to share the track-by-track review portion of that, because that's what we both do. That Dandy

1:41.8

Classic Music Hour and the Great Albums, both do track-by-track reviews,

1:45.3

but we kind of come at it slightly different ways,

1:48.4

and they're a lot less guest-heavy in their episodes,

1:52.3

but still we got to go in there as guests,

1:55.2

and we got to have a conversation with them,

1:56.8

which was pretty awesome.

1:57.7

Yeah, a lot of fun.
