It's March 14th, 1885, in Richmond, Virginia.

The early morning is bleak. The sun's barely risen above the horizon.

It's cold, and snow starts to fall from the dark clouds above.

But Lysander Rose has a job to do.

He's the caretaker of the old reservoir on the west side of town.

Whether it's blinding sunshine or rain and cats and dogs,

Rose makes a circuit of the man-made lake and the greenery surrounding it every single day. The reservoir provides

drinking water to the inhabitants of the town and it's his job to make sure everything

is working as it should be. He walks up the embankment and turns the southern corner of the
