Shall we turn at this time in our Bibles to Nehemiah, chapter 8.

Nehemiah has returned to Jerusalem some 90 years after the first return,

some 160 years from the beginning of the Babylonian captivity.

Babylon has been overthrown by the meitop Persian Empire.

Xerxes has become the king of Persia.

Niamaya was his cup-bearer. become the king of Persia.

Nehemiah was his cup bear.

Because of Nehemiah's obvious sadness

in the presence of the king,

something that was very unusual, the king questioned him on it, and he said it was because of the reports that he had heard concerning Jerusalem.
