Join me Rachel Martin for NPR's new podcast Wild Card, the game where cards control the conversation. For the first time a team of doctors transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a 62 year old man.

We're talking about a groundbreaking medical procedure at NYU Langone that certainly saved a life of a woman from New Jersey, but on a broader level could also pave the way towards making life-saving organ transplants available to anyone who needs them.

With CRISPR gene editing technology,

scientists are raising hopes that pigs could help solve the staggering kidney shortage.

More than 100,000 people are on waiting list to receive a kidney but only 17,000 people will

end up getting one each year. That's according to the National Kidney Foundation

but limitless supply is still far away for kidney transplants. The experimental surgeries were

covered under the FDA's compassionate use program and clinical studies

haven't been conducted yet. The United Network for Organ Sharing says roughly 13 Americans die every day waiting for a kidney.

Some bioethicists wonder if pigs are part of the solution.

So what is the state of kidney transplantation and what might the future look like?
