Dennis, how long were you a cop and was it always in New Jersey?

So my law enforcement career started in 2001 when I took the civil service exam

when everybody else went off to the military service so a lot of guys I went to high school with

were joining up the reserves signing four-year contracts

with the intention of returning and becoming a police officer probably under

the assumption that the military would have got them closer to police service, right?

But what these guys didn't know is that you need a veteran status in New Jersey,

because if you're a veteran in New Jersey, according to civil service, it is a direct spot to the top.

You can score literally a passing score and still be pushed ahead of somebody

who passed the test flying color.

So you could have a veteran who scores a 70.3

and a civilian who scores a 99.7.

And the veteran goes to the top.
