Last year, the journalist McKay Coppins wanted to see if Rupert Murdoch's son, James, would talk to him.

Now, Coppins had no idea what was going on in the family at the time.

There was this legal battle over the family trust.

He just knew James had once been seen as a possible heir to his father's media empire and

had since become something else, a dissident son.

He had at various points been groomed to be Rupert's successor.

And then in 2020, he sort of out of nowhere resigned his seat on the board.

James Murdoch has resigned from the board of directors at News Corp.

News Corp owns the Wall Street Journal, known for its conservative editorial page.

Rupert Murdoch's youngest son said he was leaving because of disagreements on certain editorial content.

89-year-old Rupert Murdoch has counseled world leaders espousing his philosophy,

but his son has moved to the left over the years.

And then that was it. And he never really explained himself.

He never said what it was that led him to finally make this break with the family business. He never cited the exact editorial decisions he disagreed with.
