Summary

On The Gist, we're thinking about the mass shooting in Las Vegas and the errors we make when we attempt to explain the motives of an attacker. Author Masha Gessen says it's all part of our desire to reassure ourselves that we won't fall victim to a bomb blast or a spray of bullets. "As soon as we find an explanation, we set it aside and we're reassured that it's not going to happen to us." Gessen went in search of an explanation for the Boston Marathon bombing in her book, The Brothers. 0:49.7	A white, right wing, whack job or an angry guy with a gun and a grudge?
0:55.8	That last explanation is who the shooter is in mass shootings, the vast, vast majority of the time.
1:01.8	There is on average a mass shooting almost every day in this country and it's usually a guy with a gun and a grudge.
1:09.3	Now it's not quite every day.
1:11.1	At a seven day week, six will have a mass shooting on average.
1:14.9	I'm using a definition of mass shooting that hues closely to the words mass and shooting.
1:20.6	The shooting part simply means that people are shot by a gun.
1:24.5	The mass means four or more people are shot not including the shooter and to my mind, that's a pretty fair definition.
1:30.5	This isn't the FBI's definition of mass shooting or mass killing.
1:34.4	They define mass killing as three or more people killed, not including the killer and they have to be indiscriminately killed.
1:41.1	It used to be four or more people killed.
