Summary

In the rush to develop a vaccine or treatment for Covid-19, drug companies are fast-tracking clinical trials. But those trials have a major diversity problem. Participants in major drug trials range from 70 percent to 89 percent white. This is a big problem, considering it’s a disease that disproportionately affects people of color. Kristen V. Brown reports that failing to account for minority groups could potentially impact how well a drug eventually works for those that the virus has harmed the most.

1:02.2	But first, here's what happened in virus news today.
1:26.0	Russia brushed aside international concerns about the safety of the world's first COVID-19 vaccine.
1:31.1	The country will start mass inoculation this month before clinical testing is completed. According to Russian Minister of Health, Mikhail Marashko,
1:37.9	authorities plan to start inoculating medical workers and other risk groups within two weeks
1:43.4	on a voluntary basis.
1:45.5	The vaccine will be available to the wider population from October.
1:50.7	President Vladimir Putin's announcement on Tuesday that Russia has cleared the vaccine for use

2:11.2	New Jersey is the latest U.S. state to retreat from plans to send kids back to classrooms.
2:19.2	Governor Phil Murphy will now give public schools the option of all remote teaching when
2:24.3	classes resume in September. Earlier, Murphy had required that all districts offer some
2:32.1	level of in-person instruction, with safety precautions in place.
