Summary

Most people don’t walk around thinking, “My worth is conditional.” They just feel the tension when things aren’t going well—and the relief when they are.

This episode sits with that tension. The quiet pressure to perform, to keep up, to prove something—often without realizing that your sense of value has been hooked onto outcomes, approval, or progress. When those things rise, you feel lifted. When they fall, something inside collapses. Not because anything essential changed, but because worth was never free to begin with.

Dr. Aziz reflects on how conditional self-worth forms, how it hides in plain sight, and how it can quietly run an entire emotional life. This isn’t a strategy session or a mindset fix. It’s an invitation to notice what you’ve tied yourself to—and what happens when that grip loosens.

You may find yourself recognizing something familiar, and feeling a little more space around it.

And I'm absolutely certain that you will resonate with this

0:17.0

because it's a very human thing, but it's especially challenging in people like me and my clients where we have a history of being nice,

just unease uncomfortable maybe ruminating replay. It all comes out of this. And also,

not just moment to moment stuff throughout the day, but larger stuff. Like, oh, I'm behind in my

And if you can't hear that in my voice.

1:12.3

I'm lamenting how that other person is better than I am case that didn't come across from my groans.

1:19.8

But so this is what's underneath all of it.

1:21.9

And it's not going to be some grand reveal because it's in the title of this episode, but it is conditional worth.

1:30.4

A conditional sense of self-worth. And I talk about this in my book on my own side. I call them value equivalence,

1:37.8

but basically this is where we, all of us can do this, we hook our worth onto something.

1:45.8

And the metaphor I was using with a client earlier this week was it's like,

1:49.0

you know those grappling hooks?

1:51.4

I don't know if I've actually ever seen a real grappling hook or touched the real grappling hook,
