Summary

After exploring the husbands of Mary, Queen of Scots, Mary I of England, and Mary II of England, we now arrive at the final Stuart queen—Queen Anne—and the often-overlooked man at her side: Prince George of Denmark.

In this overview episode of The Queen’s Husband, Dr. Linda Porter and I take a closer look at George—frequently dismissed as dull or insignificant—and ask whether that reputation is truly deserved. What role did he play in Anne’s life, both personally and politically? Was he simply a supportive consort, or is there more to his story than history has allowed?

Join us as we reassess George of Denmark and explore the dynamics of one of Britain’s quieter—but perhaps more meaningful—royal marriages

to do this queen's husband series that i think has been so fascinating and we have made our way

0:33.8

up to queen anne's husband and this is a subject I know nothing about. I am intrigued

0:40.7

by this period in history, but I'm going to need your help today. Well, it's a fair point because

0:48.0

I don't think people do know very much about not just Prince George of Denmark who was Queen Anne's husband, but Queen Anne herself,

0:59.5

despite there being a massive biography by Anne Somerset, which came out in 2013,

1:06.7

it is the last biography of Anne, I think, the most recent recent one and despite the fact that there is somewhat

1:13.1

more scholar there is a general uh level of greater interest in the stuarts in particular in the

1:20.9

and certainly in the later stuarts i think but it hasn't really filtered into the popular imagination

1:26.8

there's been a lot of scholarly work done on

1:28.9

this, which is I have to own my source for much of what I'm about to say. But I think there are

1:37.2

some really sort of long inbred prejudices against the later Stuarts and Queen Anne and particularly her spouse,

1:47.7

because of this fatuous comment, of course, that Charles II is supposed to have made about him,

1:53.3

that he tried him drunk and tried him sober and there was nothing in him.

1:56.9

And not only is this, when you think about it, an obviously rather silly thing to say.

2:02.4

But he got away with that sort of thing because he was Charles II.

2:07.1

Actually, actually, Prince George of Denmark is a much more interesting figure than you would perhaps realise.
