Okay, now we're going to play one of our most popular episodes about whether dogs really are as loyal as we think they are.

Since we made this episode, scientists did this amazing study on dogs that I can't wait to tell you about.

Did they test how many hot dogs a dog can eat because I ran that experiment and the number is really high.

No, they wanted to know whether dogs prefer food or their owner's praise.

Okay, how did they study that? Did they set a dog in front of two plates, one of which had a steak and the other of which had little strips of paper that said, good boy.

See which one the dog chose.

It wasn't like that because dogs can't read.

It would be amazing though if a dog was like, oh, what's this? Good boy.

They found 13 very relaxed dogs to sit absolutely still inside an MRI machine.

A piece of equipment that reads the dog's brain activity.

The scientists showed dogs different objects like a toy car on a stick and then the owner would either offer praise.

Oh, good dog, good dog, good boy.

Or give them a treat.

Who did this just treat?

And the scientists could see from the MRI that the dogs were more excited by the praise than by the food.

Oh, so that means we don't have to buy our dog treats anymore.
