Summary

As we seek to determine God’s wishes for who we are to become, pursuing Him through prayer is one of our most trustworthy tools. If we seek to strengthen that bond with our Savior by staying in constant communication with Him, we’ll have clarity on where we are headed, and we will also begin to live from a more selfless perspective. Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor-at-large of America Magazine, has learned over the years that prayer requires honesty, trust, and acceptance—but the good news is that there isn’t a right or a wrong way to pray, because God will reveal Himself to each of us differently. A relationship with God requires the same elements and effort as any of our human relationships, and when we take that approach, our faith walk will begin to change. MSNBC and NBC news anchor Richard Lui is the first Asian American man to anchor a daily national cable news program. As his career was soaring to new heights, he was presented with the greatest challenge yet: to care for his aging father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Taking this opportunity as a lesson in selflessness, Richard was prepared to walk away from his dream job, but luckily was given a chance to balance both his career and his family. Richard shares about his father’s faithfulness throughout the years, and what he’s learned by being a caregiver.

“All the things that make for a good personal relationship make for a good relationship with God.” - Father James Martin, S.J.

“God loves us. And so once people are able to accept that love, it really is transformational. They know that they're valued and who they are and that they are enough.” - Father James Martin, S.J.

“The idea is to trust that God is waiting to hear from you and that also there's no wrong way or right way to pray.” - Fames James Martin, S.J.

“Sometimes you get up in the morning, and you walk outside and you take a deep breath and something hits your brain and hits you in a way that says, You know what? I think my calling just may have changed and what I want to do just changed.” - Richard Lui

“[This memory of my dad] gave me a point of view that these little things I was doing, they were important.” - Richard Lui

When I talk to people or suffering, the key thing I say is be honest. I mean, God, once you're honesty, you hear people say, well, look at yourself compared to someone else saying the developing world who doesn't have anything to eat. And that's true. I mean, I think it's good to look at other people's situation so as they get some perspective, but by the same token, everyone's suffering is meaningful to themselves. And it's important to be honest with God.

Welcome to the Jesus Calling Podcast. As we seek to live a life where we can be a light to others with a heart of prayer, to live their needs over our own.

It helps to remember the guidance given in the Bible from Philippians 2, 3, which says, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.

It's in prayer and in selfless service that we can model the life Jesus lived by example, in loving others as much as we love ourselves.

I grew up outside of Philadelphia in a suburb called Plymouth Meeting.

I was raised Catholic, but wasn't super Catholic. My parents were good people, but I would say, and we didn't favor the kind of practices that a lot of developed Catholics and Christians do.

So we went to Mass. I'd say most Sundays. We said grace, maybe Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas. I didn't go to Catholic High School.

2:26.0

I ended up going to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, where I studied finance. We used to joke, it's finance and not finance, because you can get more money if you say you studied finance.
