I'm a water lover, so I was drawn by the exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving.

The country is home to the largest reef system in the northern hemisphere,

where there are more than 500 species of fish.

I had close encounters with sea turtles and spiny lobsters

and a pair of black-tip reef sharks.

But I had just as memorable adventures on shore,

where I visited Amaya Temple, explored caves with ancient artifacts,

and slept in a tree house.

I also swam at the base of a waterfall,

and listened to howler monkeys in the rainforest.
