I think of Michael Douglas occasionally as well,

because I think Michael Douglas was the first person I ever heard of

who was diagnosed with or claiming to have, a sex addiction. And that, to my younger

ears, sounded a little bit fanciful. It sounded a little bit unlikely. I understand the issue

a lot better now, of course. But the idea that you could be addicted to sex seemed strange

to me.

When that phrase first appeared in the public vocabulary,

it shouldn't have done, of course,

because almost everything that is potentially addictive,

possibly even everything that is potentially addictive.

When crack cocaine first appeared in this country,

the reportage was, or the reputation was,

that if you had one toke or puff or whatever the young people say of crack, okay, then you would be in the throes, in the grip of a hideous and violent addiction
