Did you know reporters used to be able to just wander around the Pentagon and talk to whoever they wanted to?

Gentlemen, no more, or at least not in such an unfettered way.

Earlier this year, the Pentagon basically said if you're a media person and you're wandering

around the Pentagon, you need to have an escort with you so that we know that you're where

you're supposed to be because there were boundaries as to where they could go even when they

could go. But now, Stephen Green, the new Pentagon rule basically says that if you talk to a member of the military

working in the Pentagon who does not already have clearance to talk to you or shares with you

any information, even if it's not top secret but is not already cleared, then that person,

the military member himself or herself, could be in jeopardy of legal

consequences.

Steve, as somebody who went to school for journalism myself, I always bristle at any restrictions

upon the press.

On the other hand, Steve, I was kind of stunned to find out that, you know, journalists could

just kind of creep around and see if they could waylay somebody and get them to spill.

What do you think about the way it was and do you think it's an improvement or do you think

we're going to run into some constitutional issues here?

Yeah, like you, I bristled at this news story when I first saw.

But the thing is, I really only read the headlines written by journalists or their editors.

And I thought, oh, wow, that strikes me as wrong.

And since I didn't have time to get into this one, I've been writing mostly about the Middle East and SpaceX this week. I just haven't had a free minute.
