To meditate on St. Thomas' profound teaching on Eucharistic transubstantiation

means to open oneself to what he calls holy teaching, sacra doctrina.

When one nowadays simply, what one nowadays simply calls theology, to distinguish it from philosophy or from religious studies,

is for St. Thomas nothing more and

nothing less than holy teaching. Holy teaching is constituted by divine faith that rests on

divine authority and embraces the truth as proposed in Scripture and taught by the Church.

Holy teaching articulates, reflects upon, and defends the intelligibility and coherence of the truths necessary for salvation.

Consider St. Thomas' opening statement in the very first article of the first question of the sumer. Something that you might have read or read at some point.

Why is holy teaching necessary?

The university disciplines cover everything, including theology.

Take problems.

Take Aristotle.

You get a theology in there, a natural theology,

and everything else is done by all the other universal disciplines.

So what's the point about holy teaching?

Isn't redundant?

Couldn't we do without it?

Then Thomas answers,

it was necessary for man's salvation.
