Matthew chapter 4, verses 1 through 4.

Then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

And after fasting 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.

And the tempter came and said to him if you are the son of

god command these stones to become loaves of bread but he answered it is written man shall not live by bread

alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

What a passage. And this is fresh on my mind because I just preached on this, but this picture

of Jesus going into the wilderness, being tempted by the devil with the fullness of the Holy Spirit on him.

As he's just been baptized, this whole picture of the father's delight in his son, the spirit

of God on his son, Trinity in the end of Matthew chapter 3.

So Jesus is being tempted in the wilderness, and the tempter, Satan comes to him and says, if you're the son of Matthew chapter 3. So Jesus is being tempted in the wilderness and the tempter,

Satan comes to him, says, if you're the son of God, command these stones to become loaves of

bread. And Jesus could have said anything in response to Satan at this point. He could have spoken

anything and it would have become scripture. Instead, he quotes Scripture. Instead,

he says, it is written, and he quotes from Deuteronomy about how God's Word applies specifically

to this temptation. And in this picture, well, there's so much here in Matthew chapter four,

but among all the things we see, we absolutely see an example, an exhortation for you and me

when we face temptation to sin, to be equipped with the Word of God, the sword of the spirit to fight against

temptation. We are powerless in our fights against temptation and our battles against the

adversary. If we do not have God's word hidden in our hearts, hidden

in our minds to be able to pull up and apply in particular situations.
