Summary

I sit down with Light Watkins to explore why so many of us stay stuck in patterns that keep us unhappy and unfulfilled. We talk about the hidden pull of the comfort zone, the resistance that shows up right before real change, and why success alone rarely delivers the fulfillment we expect.

Light shares practical ideas for cultivating presence, building meaningful habits, and taking the “tortoise approach” to lasting change. If you’ve ever felt trapped between chasing success and wanting a more meaningful life, this conversation will give you a different way to think about growth.

All right, Mr. Light Watkins. How you doing, my friend? I'm amazing. I'm happy to be here.

0:12.3

Good. Well, glad to have you here as well. And I feel like it's been a long time coming.

0:17.0

There's a couple people over the last year or two have sent me your stuff and like you

0:21.8

should have this guy on the show. And so when when your team reached out, it's like, okay, yeah,

0:25.6

let's do it. Let's start with why do people keep going back to the same patterns that keep them

0:34.8

stuck, unhappy and unhealthy. They know that that's the pattern that they

0:38.9

don't want. They try and get away, and it seems like it's like a black hole that just has

0:44.2

like a gravitational pull that sucks them back in. Why does this keep happening? I think we want to

0:50.3

start getting honest about the fact that these are human tendencies. It's not something

0:57.8

that's a character flaw in anyone. We're wired for comfort. We're wired for familiarity.

1:05.3

Even if it's better the devil you know, if that's what we've been experiencing it's more it's it feels safer than

1:13.6

then initiating some stark level of change and so um it's just that's just what we do you know

1:24.0

it's just what we do and and if we are honest about that, then we can be a little more intentional about making different choices.

1:32.2

Hmm. Hmm. Well, you say that we're wired for familiarity. What do you mean? What do you mean by that?

1:39.9

Well, familiarity equates to safety when you're when you're operating from a tribal mindset.

1:46.9

And we have to remember that we are still operating on the 10,000-year-old model of the human biology,

1:56.1

which is very much living in tribes, not coming across more than a couple hundred people a year,

2:02.2

not doing anything that's going to get us ostracized from the tribe, not making any crazy choices,

2:09.0

falling into line, and, you know, et cetera, et cetera. And so it's not that we have to be

2:15.4

consciously aware that this is what's happening, but this is what's

2:18.7

happening. And we can tell this is what's happening because this is our tendency. It's been our

2:22.6

tendency forever. Even people like David Goggins, who's kind of like the icon for, you know,

...
