Lawmakers in Congress kicked the debt limit can down the road last week, but not very

far.

The US was set to reach its borrowing limit based on already agreed upon spending in

mid-October.

Senate Leader Mitch McConnell agreed to extend to December 3rd, but has said Republicans

will not vote to extend it further than that.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has insisted Democrats will not use reconciliation to raise

the debt limit with only Democratic votes.

So since this issue isn't going anywhere, today we're going to take a look at the origins

of the debt ceiling, the role it's played in politics, and whether it will be abolished.
