Summary

"I am delighted to share with you the newest cycle of Covenant & Conversation essays on the weekly parsha (Torah reading). I am particularly excited to introduce a Family Edition accompaniment to this year's series which has two main aims. First, to present the ideas in Covenant & Conversation in a simplified way, making my ideas more accessible to children and teenagers. Second, to act as an educational resource for parents, teachers and anyone else to engage their children and students in meaningful and stimulating conversations about the parsha." Hello and welcome to another episode of Covenant and Conversation with me, Rabbi Sachs.

In each new episode, we'll explore a Jewish idea from the Hebrew Bible based on the terror reading of the week.

0:26.7

Akev, the politics of memory. In Akev, Moshe sets out a political doctrine of such wisdom that it can

0:34.5

never become redundant or obsolete. He does it by way of a pointed contrast

0:39.6

between the ideal to which Israel is called and the danger with which it's faced. This is the ideal.

0:48.2

Observe the command of the Lord your God walking in his ways and revering him, for the Lord

0:53.1

your God is bringing you into a good land,

0:55.2

a land with streams and pools of water, with strings flowing in the valleys and hills,

1:00.6

a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey,

1:06.0

a land where bread will not be scarce and you will like nothing.

1:09.9

I like land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

1:15.5

When you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

1:24.4

That is the ideal.

1:26.5

This is the danger. Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God,

1:33.2

failing to observe his commands, laws and decrees that I'm giving you today. Otherwise, when you eat

1:39.2

and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large

1:46.3

and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become

1:52.0

proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt out of the land of

1:58.0

slavery. You may say to yourself, my power and the strength of my hands

2:02.6

have produced this wealth for me, but remember the Lord your God for it is he who gives you

2:08.7

the ability to produce wealth. And so confirms his covenant which he swore to your forefathers

2:14.5

as it is today. These two passages follow directly on from one another.
