This Saturday Night Live sketch said more than it meant to.

For the Colson Center, I'm John Stone Street with The Point.

On Saturday Night Live last week, in a sketch featuring Goober the Clown,

Cessaly Strong ridiculed Texas Heartbeat Law.

Strong told her own abortion story using, quote,

fun clown stuff, like spinning bow ties, a squirting flower, and a clown costume.

Her intent, I think, was to portray abortion as no big deal,

not as dark and scary as it's made out to be,

and that women should not be forced to talk about it.

But the sketch came across as awkward and sad.

Perhaps Strong's parody is actually rooted in her own deep pain.

But if it's really no big deal,

why wouldn't people be more excited about their freedom

abortion supposedly brings?

It's perhaps because the pain so many women feel after abortion isn't just from social

stigma or new laws.

It's because of what abortion actually is.

An act of violence perpetrated on mother and child, which is why it's no laughing matter.
