Summary

Kayla is joined by author for both children and adults, Leigh Lewis, who struck gold when she discovered the untold real stories of female pirates from history’s past. They discuss how she was first inspired to write about pirates in poetry form and the ways in which history is far too often dominated by the misleading white male perspective.

1:25.6

feather hats and they're bucksome and they're running from these pirates and I don't that's not

1:31.2

something I want to teach her. That's not something a signal that I want to show my daughter.

1:35.5

Well that's where today's guest comes in. Today we're going to sit and talk to Lee Lewis. She's

1:40.2

the author of pirate queens, Dauntless women who dared to rule the high seas. Her book proves that

1:47.2

women have been making their mark in all aspects of history. Even on the high seas, legends and

1:52.0

movies give us the impression that pirates were mainly male, but Lee along with several other historians

1:57.2

are writing this wrong. She's written so many books for kids along with political and adult humor

2:03.2

and she's also on the board of society for children's books of writers and illustrators. She's
