And that wind, it was like a living thing, exploding in a furious howling scream that shook

the rafters and banged against the door. On any other night, Mother would have paced the small front

room, worried. But the roof hold? Could a tree come down, smashing the cabin into splinters? But this was no

ordinary night. Mother was in labor, the pain coming in tight waves, sharp and relentless. She was no

stranger to childbirth, having already born a dozen children.

This lightning split the sky open.

Mother knew with a stricken heart what this storm was.

It was a punishment, a punishment on her.

Mother didn't want this baby. She already loathed it.

What else could a 13th baby be but the devil himself?

Gleeful at finding a doorway into this world,

a doorway torn from her very flesh.

Mother had cursed this child.

She knew the way mothers always know that something was terribly wrong,

that whatever grew inside her swollen belly was evil, foul, unclean. The infant wasn't born

in the regular way of things. Instead, it wrenched itself from mother's body. Its first cry, an unearthly, shrieking growl. That's when she lifted her head and saw just what she had brought into this world.
